Read in English by Phil Chenevert This story, about a man who wakes up transformed into a bug and the repercussions it has on his life and the people around him, has intrigued me for many years.

For instance, the treatment of the Barnabas family, with their requirement to first prove guilt before they could request a pardon from it and the way their fellow villagers desert them have been pointed out as a direct reference to the anti-Semitic climate at the time.

Delightfully insane, deliberately mysterious, it brought to mind The quest of the Holy Grailin one episode, questing knights arrive at a Castle, the Lady of the Castle has leprosy and can only be cured by bathing in the blood of a maiden of noble birth.

It could be bureaucracy frqnz perfectly insane, or Capitalist society, or the modern condition in a post-Enlightenment world or a vision of life as a struggle for power or as resistance against the attempts of others to dominate us, or about the relationship, here dysfunctional, between sex and intimacy, or kafoa Kafka knows what.

Their sentences are way too long – and I’m using standards in literature, not an actual conversation – and they seem to lack to reason and decency owned by ordinary people.
