In the future I’d check out another Leonardo Sciascia, but I might be more likely to read a nonfiction history of twentieth-century Italian history and politics, especially if someone would give me a specific suggestion. In Sciascia’s fiction, it is the detective, not the murderer, who is isolated and suspected.
Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine. The Day of the Owl is a short book, yet even within its limited scope it seems to meander for much of the time. Captain Bellodi is assigned this frustrating case and quickly realises that everyone covers for everyone else for fear of being next on the list of the Mafiosi.
Sciascia knew better than anyone how acutely sensitive Sicily is to any public signals about the Mafia. That he was terminally ill he died two years later is only part of the story. A I read this peonardo a plane on the long haul from Australia to Malta.
