Leslej the next 13 years, the women struggle to find their way, each drawing on her unique inner resources to survive. Lesley Lokko might be “the author who brought brains to the blockbuster”, but, at least based on Bitter Chocolate, I highly disagree, it is not a very intelligent book – rather the opposite and I do not feel inclined to check out her previous work, based on this experience.
Have loved her previous novels but this didnt live up to my expectations. Che poi me lo spiega, come fa. If you need something to get invested in, something to make you think, something to make you feel every emotion under the sun and something to stay in your head, then look no further.

Apartheid, democracy and corruption are laced through the story and highlight a very intelligent author who feels passionately about these topics, yet at times they detract from the main story line. Bitter Chocolate by Lesley Lokko
The writing left me hanging as Lokko alternated her narrative between major characters, lesey I absolutely had to keep reading until the end. Part of me was just wanting to get it finished. The stories of these women were twists and turns at many opportunities.

This book has also little to do with real lives of immigrants – it will hardly get as glamorous as the book describes. Like the other book, years go leslet in the swoop of a sentence and your like, how did it get that far in cloccolato future?
Bitter Chocolate was too big, i struggled through it. I read a few chapters and was unimpressed, but for some reason I pressed on.
